About the film
What is it like to have God like surgical powers, yet to struggle against your own humanity? What is it like to try and save a life, and yet to fail?Shot in a Ukrainian hospital full of desperate patients and makeshift equipment, “The English Surgeon “ is an intimate portrait of brain surgeon Henry Marsh as he wrestles with the dilemmas of the doctor patient relationship. “It’s like selling your soul to the devil, but what can you do? My son had a brain tumour as a baby and I was desperate for someone to help me. I simply can’t walk away from that need in others”With an original soundtrack by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, “The English Surgeon” openly confronts moral and ethical issues which touch every one of us.



Director’s Statement
In 2003 I met brain surgeon Henry Marsh and we quickly discovered that we both had a love of Ukraine. On Henry’s next visit out to Kyiv I went with him, and within minutes of being there seeing him deal with an endless queue of desperate patients, I knew I had the film about Ukraine I had wanted to make for years. Here was a man whom the very ill saw as a great saviour from the West and whom parents hoped could save their dying child, but who suffered because he knew he could only help a few of the patients in front of him.This struggle to do good things in a selfish and difficult world is at the heart of my film.

Πώς είναι να έχεις σχεδόν θεϊκές χειρουργικές ικανότητες, κι όμως να αγωνίζεσαι ενάντια στην ίδια σου την ανθρώπινη φύση; Πώς είναι να προσπαθείς και τελικά να καταφέρνεις να σώζεις μια ζωή, αλλά παρ’ όλα αυτά να αποτυγχάνεις; Γυρισμένη σε ένα νοσοκομείο της Ουκρανίας γεμάτο απεγνωσμένους ασθενείς και αυτοσχέδιο εξοπλισμό, η ταινία «Ο Άγγλος Χειρουργός» αποτελεί μια ενδόμυχη περιγραφή του νευροχειρούργου Χένρυ Μάρς, καθώς αυτός παλεύει με τα διλήμματα της σχέσης γιατρού-ασθενούς. Η ταινία αντιμετωπίζει ευθέως ζητήματα ηθικής και δεοντολογίας που αγγίζουν τον καθένα μας. Κι όλα αυτά σε μια χώρα που λέγεται Ουκρανία, και που πασχίζει να καταφέρει το ίδιο...

Το 2003 συνάντησα τον νευροχειρουργό Χένρι Μαρς και αμέσως ανακαλύψαμε την κοινή μας αγάπη για την Ουκρανία. Ακολούθησα τον Χένρι στην επόμενη επίσκεψή του στο Κίεβο, και μέσα στα πρώτα λίγα λεπτά που βρέθηκα δίπλα του και τον έβλεπα να αντιμετωπίζει ατέλειωτες ουρές απεγνωσμένων ασθενών, ήξερα πως είχα την ταινία για την Ουκρανία που τόσα χρόνια αναζητούσα. Εδώ ήταν ο άνθρωπος τον οποίο οι βαριά άρρωστοι έβλεπαν σαν τον μεγάλο σωτήρα που ήρθε από την Δύση να σώσει αυτούς και τα ετοιμοθάνατα παιδιά τους, όμως ο ίδιος υπέφερε γιατί ήξερε πως μπορούσε να βοηθήσει μονάχα μερικούς από τους τόσους. Αυτός ο αγώνας του αλτρουισμού μέσα σε έναν τόσο εγωιστικό και δύσκολο κόσμο, βρίσκεται στην καρδιά της ταινίας μου.
